Nature of Death

November 2024

This artist book compares the stages of grief with the stages of decomposition, letting nature take over both processes.

My Pop Pop passed away when I was 9. He grew up in the Appalachian mountains but I never got the chance to know that part of him well. I am awed by the approach to death Appalchian communities took. Family members prepared their loved ones body with simple means of embalming, usually camphor. The whole family took part in digging the final resting place. Coffins were either made by the family or donated from the community.

This book is a coping for his death, relating my grief with the very natural process of dying to try and emmulate the death traditions of the Valley.
